Designer Holiday Home Decor Tips

It’s Thanksgiving week and the holiday season is officially in full swing! I took a poll a while back on Instagram asking when people set up their holiday decor and almost everyone said the weekend after Thanksgiving. I figured this was the perfect time to share my top tips for holiday decoration!

The best part about holiday decor? The more the merrier! I sure love an over-the-top look and have a secret to making it all look gorgeous instead of gaudy. In order to make the most of your holiday decor, put away some of your everyday home accessories. This makes your holiday items look more intentional and you less like a hoarder!

Now we all enjoy a nice hand-me-down now and again but I encourage you to use what you’ve been given (by family and friends) and add in items you absolutely love. You don’t have to break the bank for holiday decor, set a budget, be intentional, and buy items you for you to enjoy!

I never thought I would be the girl setting up a holiday village but here we are! These sweet ceramic homes caught my attention instantly and look so sweet lit up at night! I use the same fake tea lights from Halloween which work perfectly!

Something different we decided to do this year was to forgo a tree. I’m a tree lover but unfortunately there’s not much space in our apartment for one. In lieu of a tree, Shelby had the idea to string lights on our balcony! How had I never thought of this before? Adding a layer of lights really brings out the magic of the season! Between the fairy and string lights, our home feels so festive and cozy!

To create this village, I simply combined three elements: white ceramic homes, a variety of trees (switch up color and height), and some fake fluffy snow to anchor the display. When creating a holiday theme keep it simple. Your woodland-fairy-santa-smurf look will be overwhelming and difficult to nail down. A wooded wonderland is more clear and easy to execute!

My last tip would be if you want easier cleanup, ditch the glittery items! I absolutely love glitter but have come to the realization that Shelby does not. She likes to remind everyone that glitter is the herpes of craft supplies, ugh!

While I didn’t ditch the current glittery items I already own, I went ahead and focused on purchasing new items without glitter and whew it was way more difficult than I thought! Those holiday elves sure do love some glitter!

Purchase decor that won’t take too much work or cleanup time year after year. Decorating for the holidays should be fun! Eliminating this layer of “work” will make your family members more likely to pitch in and have fun.

I hope you all enjoyed my top tips on decorating for the holidays! I’ve linked the sources for the above items so you can shop! The village homes and silver trees are from the Dollar Spot (renamed Bullseye’s Playground) at Target and cannot be linked. They have similar homes in other departments that can be found in store as well!

Thanks for stopping by and have a great week!
